Mendelssohn – Selections from Songs without Words
Philip Sawyers – Cello Concerto

Northwest Sinfonietta and the International Chinese Christian Church of Tacoma are thrilled to present you with this exclusive opportunity to see David Lockington give a private recital for our supporters! David is performing Philip Sawyer's Cello Concerto in L.A. in mid-March, and he has graciously offered to preview his performance for our members when he's here next week for our Mass in Time of War concert performance. Seating is limited, so RSVP and claim your seat at this recital!

"The Cello Concerto is an extremely satisfying representative of a genre that is relatively uncommon in British music. If I was pressed, I would say that a ‘finger in the air’ comparison would be ‘Finzi meets Searle’ and discuss Schumann but this is facile. Philip Sawyer’s Cello Concerto is unique and will reveal itself in repeated hearings: if it is given the chance." – John France, Musicweb International

Felix Mendelssohn, one of the great Romantic Period composers, wrote many lyrical pieces of music for the piano titled Lieder ohne Worte or "Songs Without Words." Of these works, Mendelssohn said, "If you ask me what I had in mind when I wrote it, I would say: just the song as it is. And if I happen to have certain words in mind for one or another of these songs, I would never want to tell them to anyone, because the same words never mean the same things to others. Only the song can say the same thing, can arouse the same feelings in one person as in another, a feeling that is not expressed, however, by the same words."
