Seattle Festival Orchestra concludes the 2016-2017 season with works by three “B’s” – Beethoven, Brahms and Berwald. The Hungarian Dances of Brahms will certainly be familiar to audiences with their passion as well as charm.
Beethoven composed multiple overtures for his lone opera Fidelio (or Leonore, the title Beethoven originally chose and preferred) each having a unique vantage point. This program features the third of the three Leonore overtures.
Swedish composer Franz Berwald never found his place in the music world during his lifetime. Reports indicate his arrogance was the main reason he had to leave the music world, choosing instead to work in medicine. He later returned to music but found few performances of his works. When his four symphonies were pulled out of the drawer, they were noted for their originality and progressive viewpoint. Berwald’s Symphony No. 3 “Sinfonie singuliere” employs spare but memorable melodic lines and keeps the listener’s interest through unexpected shifts in mood and atmosphere.
