Verdi – Messa da Requiem
Traditional Jewish songs

Seattle Peace Chorus presents Verdi for the People, a tribute to the Jewish Diaspora. It honors the strength of the human spirit and the power of music to keep that spirit alive during the darkest times.

Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem, composed in 1874, was originally written to honor the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. During WWII, conductor Raphael Schächter, a prisoner at Theresienstadt Nazi concentration camp, taught this piece to 150 fellow prisoners with only a single smuggled score and a piano in a damp basement. The prisoners memorized the piece and performed it as an act of cultural rebellion, also demonstrating the resilience of the human spirit. We will remember that event with our performance of the requiem along with beautiful traditional Jewish songs.
