The Polish-Jewish pianist Maria Agata Wolowska-Szymanowska (1789-1831) was the first professional woman virtuoso in the history of western music. She concertized in Russia, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

Szymanowska was also a self-taught composer, who left an output of about 100 works, mostly for piano solo. Her musical language has had a major impact on the musical development of Fryderyk Chopin.

Slawomir P. Dobrzanski is the author of the first English-language biography of Maria Szymanowska. He has also published in Poland in 2013 a world-premiere CD recording of her complete works for piano.

Join Dr. Dobrzanski in a short performance of Szymanowska's works, including:

Le Murmure. Nocturne
Mazurkas Nos. 3, 4, and 9-15
Romance de Monsieur le Prince Alexandre Galitsyn
Études Nos. 4, 7, 9, 14, 16, and 18
Nocturne in B-flat major

Following Dr. Dobrzanski's performance are participants of the Seattle Int'l Piano Festival in a short master class of works by Chopin and Beethoven.
