Beethoven – Sonata in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2
Beethoven – Sonata in D major, Op. 102, No. 2

"Complete Works for Cello and Piano" is a series of three concerts surveying all five sonatas and three sets of concert variations for violoncello and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

Today's program:

Sonata in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2 (1796). The second of the two early sonatas, this ground-breaking work expanded the role of the cello as an equal partner to the piano and is in turn brooding, stormy, playful and virtuosic.

Sonata in D major, Op. 102, No. 2 (1815) is Beethoven’s final essay in the form, featuring the inwardly passionate Adagio followed by a stunning and shocking fugue, prefiguring the Grosse Fugue and the Op. 130 string quartets.

A pre-concert lecture about these works with pianist David White will begin at 4:50pm.

This is concert #3 in the series. Presented by the Onyx Chamber Players.
