Edward Gregson – The Plantagenets
Philip Sparke – Hymn of the Highlands
Alberto Ginastera – Estancia (Ranch) Suite
Jeffrey W. Taylor – I Come in Peace

We continue our season-long exploration of contemporary composer Edward Gregson’s works with the performance of his symphonic study, The Plantagenets. This piece, which portrays the mood and feelings of the age of the royal House of Plantagenet — rulers of England from the mid-12th to the late-15th centuries — is typical of the virtuosity of modern brass band writing.

Also featured is Philip Sparke’s Hymn of the Highlands. Sparke, a well-known UK modern composer for brass band as well as other instrumental groups, wrote this suite under commission from the Yorkshire Building Society Band for the 2002 European Brass Band Championships. The movements are all named after, and reflect the character of, various locations in Scotland.

Mid-20th century Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s Estancia (Ranch) Suite celebrates the image of the Argentine cowboy’s (gaucho's) life on the grassy plains (pampas). It recounts the romance of a city boy who falls in love with a cattle ranch owner's pretty daughter. She rejects him at first, but he wins her over when he proves he can match the local gauchos when it comes to handling horses and dancing.

Local composer (and BBNW tubist) Jeffrey W. Taylor’s I Come in Peace rounds out this sure-to-be enjoyable program.
