[BROADCAST] Beth Morrison Projects: Opera of the Week – Angel's Bone
Free
Du Yun – Angel's Bone
BMP is keeping the work of our artists out in the world as theaters are shuttered by offering an “Opera of the Week" which will stream on our homepage for one week every Thursday at noon.
This week we are featuring Du Yun and Royce Vavrek's Angel's Bone, winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize. BMP would have been opening this piece with LA Opera on May 1 for its West Coast premiere. For the next week only, both organizations are streaming this extraordinary work on their channels.
Angel’s Bone follows the plight of two fallen angels whose nostalgia for earthly delights finds them far from heaven. They are found battered and bruised by a man and his wife, known only as Mr. and Mrs. X.E., who have longed for a better life than their modest middle-class status. Nevertheless, Mr. and Mrs. X.E. set out to nurse the wounded angels back to health: they bathe them, wash the dirt from their nails...then lock them in a room, leaving them a claw foot bathtub for a shared bed, and decide to exploit these magical beings for wealth and personal gains.
Angel's Bone melds chamber music, theatre, pop music, spoken word, opera, cabaret and electronics, exploring the dark effects and motivations behind modern-day slavery and the trafficking industry. We share this work with gratitude to the extraordinary artists who worked on this production. They have given permission for us to share this recording free of charge.
The broadcast will start at 12 PM Eastern / 9 AM Pacific
