Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax, both consummate solo artists, together form one of the closest musical friendships and chamber music partnerships of all time.
In the spirit of that friendship, this presentation features a casual and intimate framework in which the two share banter and anecdotes that go beyond the music. This concert features Beethoven's A major cello sonata, a substantial, lyrical work that insists on equality between the cello and piano roles. Mr. Ax and Mr. Ma have continued to explore the richness of this piece since first recording it together more than thirty years ago. Also on the program are works by two of Beethoven's greatest successors, Brahms and Mendelssohn.
