Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13 “Winter Daydreams”
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Capriccio Italien, Op. 45
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Festival Coronation March in D major, TH 50, ČW 47

The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under Music Director Paavo Järvi performs Tchaikovsky, live from the Tonhalle Maag in Zurich. The composer's poetic First Symphony is followed by the evocative Capriccio Italien and the rousing Coronation March. The concert is part of a Tchaikovsky project which will culminate in the release of a recording of the complete orchestral works.

Tchaikovsky's First Symphony caused the young composer great pains to complete, yet the finished work succeeds in immediately transporting the listener into an evocative world of "Winter Daydreams", as well as including orchestral dances that anticipate the music for which the composer of The Nutcracker and Swan Lake would later become so famous. The Capriccio Italien exudes joie de vivre as a personal homage to the country that so often helped to restore the Tchaikovsky's spirits, while the Coronation March displays his skill at providing the necessary brilliance and pomp in music written for special occasions – in this case, for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883.

The livestream will take place 10:30am Pacific.
