Town Hall's Town Music series has steadily grown and become a part of our community, and after a decade of successful seasons we’re thrilled to welcome back the JACK Quartet, one of the flagship groups who helped define our stage during Town Music’s early seasons. They’ll be joined by Joshua Roman for a performance of “Tornado” – a piece Town Hall helped commission Roman to compose as a capstone for our Town Music season.
JACK operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the performance, commissioning, and spread of new string quartet music, and has been lauded by the Washington Post as “the go-to quartet for contemporary music, tying impeccable musicianship to intellectual ferocity and a take-no-prisoners sense of commitment.” Join us as this internationally renowned ensemble teams up with Seattle’s own local virtuoso for a Town Music reunion performance 10 years in the making.
JACK Quartet has received the Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, as well as New Music USA’s Trailblazer Award, and the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. They have performed to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall (USA), Lincoln Center (USA), Miller Theatre (USA), Wigmore Hall (United Kingdom), Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (Netherlands), IRCAM (France), Kölner Philharmonie (Germany), the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland), La Biennale di Venezia (Italy), Suntory Hall (Japan), Bali Arts Festival (Indonesia), Festival Internacional Cervatino (Mexico), and Teatro Colón (Argentina).
The evening’s repertoire will consist of Jefferson Friedman’s Quintet (a Town Hall commission from several years ago), madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo (arranged by JACK founder Ari Streisfeld), and Joshua Roman’s newly-composed wonder, Tornado. The concert also features Amy Williams’ dynamic string quartet Richter Textures and John Zorn’s monstrous cello duo, Ouroboros.
