Benjamin C.S. Boyle, piano
Rebecca Myers, soprano

From 1904-1978 Nadia Boulanger held her esteemed Wednesday afternoon group class and evening salons. Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Gabriel Fauré, Leonard Bernstein, Paul Valéry, and many other luminaries across the arts were frequent attendees. The works of J.S. Bach provided the foundation of knowledge and ideas that were meticulously traced through the ages.

In this same tradition Dr. Boyle offers Analysis Salons from his studio in Philadelphia. Although the livestreamed nature of this episode means we can't distribute the customary wine and cheese, viewers are invited to join in this tradition!

In this episode of Analysis Salon, we explore the enigmatic early J.S. Bach chorale Christ ist erstanden. We'll explore modality vs. tonality, doubling and spacing in harmony, contrapuntal design, and form in order to better understand and appreciate Bach's great achievement and why we love it. Whether you're a music theory nerd like us, or curious to know how to deepen your listening, there will be something for everyone! Soprano Rebecca Myers will perform.

The livestream begins at: 12pm PDT / 3pm EDT / 8pm BST (UK)

About the series
Recital Stream is a new platform for audiences and performers of classical music in response to the Coronavirus crisis.

We are all adjusting to a life lived further apart from one another. But staying at home needn't mean missing out on the thrill of witnessing great music, performed live. Indeed, as we navigate these treacherous and uncertain waters, it is our belief that we need great art more than ever.

Our outstanding featured artists will be presenting informal performances live from their living rooms to yours.

Artists across the world have been severely affected by the current crisis, as engagements evaporate and incomes are decimated for months. We recognise that particularly in these challenging times, not everyone will be able to spare the price of a concert ticket. That's why these livestreamed concerts are free for everyone to enjoy. For those with the means who would like to support our artists, however, there will be the opportunity to donate to them directly.
