Project: Music Heals Us co-director Andrew Janss (Marlboro Music Festival; Chamber Music Society Two) and pianist Audrey Vardanega (artistic director – Musaics of the Bay; student of Richard Goode) present a musical journey through the past to the present day, showcasing works by four composers of two historical periods during which the future seemed ominously opaque. Beginning with contemporaneous works of Claude Debussy and Anton Webern, written in the fog-of-war of WWI, we then jump to two new works by JUNO-award winning composer Vivian Fung and Milad Yousufi, an unlikely but ferociously talented composer born into a Taliban-ruled Afghanistan where music was completely banned.
Filmed by award-winning music filmmakers Tristan Cook, Mike Grittani, and Zac Nicholson, this concert is as visually stunning as it is musically awe-inspiring.
Finally, attendees will get a sneak-preview of the new music documentary The Sound of Us, produced by Yamaha for the NAMM Believe in Music Festival 2021. This powerful documentary, directed by nine-time Emmy award-winning producer Chris Gero, illustrates, during this critical time in history, that music gives sound to hope and courage, allows us to grieve and be honest, and is the great, universal language that unites us all.
