Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55 "Eroica"
OCO kicks off its 30th season with Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony, “Eroica"; Saint-Saëns' Havanaise for orchestra and violin;
Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, featuring added brass, oboes, and bassoons; and Jennifer Higdon's Celebration Fanfare.
Olympia violinist Steven Lovinger plays Havanaise, Opus 83, for violin and orchestra by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns (1835- 1921). Written in 1887 for Cuban violinist Rafael Diaz Albertini, the rhythms of a habanera give this bravura work tremendous appeal. Steven is a frequent Olympia soloist in chamber music concerts, several times with OCO. He also sits in the first violin section in the Olympia Symphony.
Beethoven’s (1770-1827) third symphony “Eroica” wasn’t written for his mysterious “Eternal Beloved,” but actually for someone else he admired: Napoleon. Beethoven’s admiration for the diminutive French ruler disintegrated when Napoleon declared himself emperor.
A gala performance of Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks was written for an outdoor performance with fireworks. King George II commissioned this for a huge military band. OCO’s performance includes 8 oboes, 3 bassoons, 3 horns, 3 trumpets, timpani, and side drum, as well as a full string section.
Tickets: $20 ($10 student/senior/military)
