Franz Joseph Haydn – Symphony No. 104 in D major, H. I:104 “London”
Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 “Emperor”
Two Classical-period masterpieces are featured on the OSO’s March concert, titled “From Teacher to Pupil” – Haydn’s final symphony and Beethoven’s last concerto. Beethoven traveled from his native Bonn to Vienna in the hope of studying with Mozart; alas, Mozart died while en route, and Beethoven instead learned about form and theme from “Old Papa Haydn.” New York pianist and audience favorite Angie Zhang returns to the WCPA stage to perform Beethoven’s majestic “Emperor” Concerto with her “orchestra away from home.” Haydn’s “London” Symphony shows this most important composer at the height of his mastery, and is why he was dubbed “The Father of the Symphony”!
