Kerwin Young – Coming Forth By Day (world premiere)

The Houston-based professional ensemble ROCO kicks off its Season 16 Connections series, featuring site-specific collaborations with community partners, via a free, livestreamed performance on November 1, 2020, featuring a world premiere ROCO commission by composer and recording producer Kerwin Young, Coming Forth by Day, for oboe, viola, cello, and baritone. Taking its inspiration from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, the work depicts the journey of the soul, through seven miniatures. Featured ROCO musicians will include Alecia Lawyer, oboe; Lorento Golofeev, viola; Shino Hayashi, cello; and Timothy Jones, baritone.

Presented in collaboration with MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling in the Arts) Houston, at Talento Bilingue De Houston, and Grupo de Teatro Índigo, the event is ROCO’s annual celebration of Día de los Muertos, and is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Macario Ramirez of Casa Ramirez Folkart Gallery, who has embodied Mexican-American culture in the Houston arts scene and was the first in the area to popularize the holiday and the making of ofrendas.

Following ROCO’s premiere, Grupo de Teatro Índigo will present via livestream their 7th annual Day of the Dead musical play, Calavera con Calavera (Skulls); an original piece written by co-founder, Eddie Gonzalez, which explores the holiday’s tradition and meaning, and includes live traditional Mexican songs and dances, accompanied by mariachi musicians from University of Houston Downtown, and performers from Danza Chikawa Dance.

The livestream will take place at 5pm Central / 3pm Pacific, broadcasting live from Talento Bilingue de Houston Center, in Houston, TX.
