Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana which translates as “We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward.” Seattle Collaborative Orchestra explores how music can be a powerful tool in expressing societal turmoil.
Our season opener begins with Hanna Benn’s Sankofa, followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major and Spheres of a Genius third place composition competition winner Julian Garvue as he performs his world premiere of Concertino for Piano and Orchestra, celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Thelonious Monk. SCO ends the evening with another short musical premiere Chocolate, by Seattle Film Institute graduate composer Makenna Carrico.
