Jake Heggie – Again
Samuel Barber – A Hand of Bridge, Op. 35
Gian Carlo Menotti – The Telephone

Seattle Modern Opera Company presents Romance in America, a night of one-act operas displaying the nature of many romantic relationships.

Again by Jake Heggie looks at the iconic duo of Lucy and Ricky from the beloved show I Love Lucy. We get a behind-the-scenes look as to why Lucy considers leaving Ricky, because of his misogynistic views on comedy and abuse.

A Hand of Bridge by Samuel Barber is about two couples playing Bridge together. They do this every week, and they always seem to think about everything other than the game.

The Telephone by Gian Carlo Menotti is a hilarious opera about a man trying to propose to his girlfriend, but she won’t stop talking on the phone. It was first performed in 1947; SMOC’s new adaptation is set in 2007, when the first iPhone was released to the public.
