Four unique American compositions spotlighting different aspects of our nation’s musical identity will be featured: Edward Collins’ folk-inspired The Cowboy’s Breakdown; Richard Rodgers’ Slaughter on Tenth Avenue from the world of musical theater; Marion Bauer’s Sun Splendor, an important symphonic poem by one of America’s leading women of music; and Gunther Schuller’s Journey into Jazz, a delightful story of a young man’s efforts to become an ace jazz musician. The SPO is joined by KNKX’s morning host Dick Stein as narrator, along with a talented combo from the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band.
