Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya plays together with the Sinfonieorchester Basel for the first time under the baton of Marek Janowski at the Stadtcasino Basel. The programme includes Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto, a masterpiece of the Romantic repertoire, conceived less as a virtuoso showpiece than a "thing between symphony, concerto and great sonata". It is contrasted with Richard Strauss's moving Metamorphosen, commissioned by the Basel music patron Paul Sacher and written, in 1945, in the aftermath of the bombing of Munich. Completing the programme is Franz Schubert's Overture "in the Italian style", D. 590.
