Gabriela Lena Frank – Leyendas, an Andean Walkabout
Joseph Haydn – Mass for Troubled Times, Hob. XXII/11 “Nelson Mass”

SMCO and Choral Arts collaborate for the first time in a performance that responds to the current sociopolitical scene and inspires hope for the New Year. Haydn's landmark Mass for Troubled Times ("Nelson Mass") is an uplifting masterpiece written in a time of great anxiety. Gabriela Lena Frank's 21st century masterwork Leyendas combines western classical and Andean folk music traditions, drawing on the concept of mestizaje, where cultures co-exist without the subjugation of one by the other. There may be no greater way to commemorate the anniversary of an administration that continues to push a travel ban than by celebrating the artistic voice of a woman of color, the daughter of immigrants whose music is strongly influenced by her Peruvian/Chinese and Lithuanian/Jewish heritage.
