David Fitzpatrick, oboe
Rachel Blumenthal, flute

Golijov – Last Round
Barber – Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings
Bernstein – Halil – Nocturne for Flute and Orchestra
Tchaikovsky – Serenade for Strings

Two acclaimed guest artists perform in Seattle for the first time: flutist Rachel Blumenthal (Chicago Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony, Sarasota Opera) and oboist David Fitzpatrick (Artistic Director, Incidental Chamber Players). Works of Barber, Golijov, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein form a more powerful, wordless response to the latter composer's now-ubiquitous quote, "This shall be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." Ms. Blumenthal will perform Bernstein's powerful work Halil for flute and orchestra, composed in honor of a young Israeli flutist Yadin Tanenbaum who was killed at the Suez Canal during the 1973 Yom Kippur war. The season concludes with a charming and passionate work that Tchaikovsky considered one of his finest: the Serenade for Strings in C major.
