Online event
Robert Schumann — Selected works
Dmitri Shostakovich — Selected works

We’re delighted to be collaborating once again with Emerald City Music to bring you this extraordinary FREE virtual event. Here “our” much honored ensemble-in-residence, the Calidore String Quartet, reprises two works recently recorded on their newest album, Babel. Recalling the biblical account of human endeavor thwarted by intractable language differences, the selections remind us that when words fail, music speaks. The video pairs Schumann and Shostakovich performed in a unique setting. Produced and filmed in New York City, it was recorded in an acoustically blessed vault below an old Brooklyn church.

The performance will be online for you to watch at your convenience for one month, beginning May 30, 2021 at noon. We are offering this remarkable video free, but there will be a donation opportunity if you so desire. This special donation will go to our summer BFM musicians as a bonus, following a very difficult year of Covid-imposed isolation and its lost concert opportunities. Please join us for this remarkable event – which couldn’t be a more appealing preview of the Calidore's performances during the July festival.

The Calidore String Quartet has been praised by The New York Times for its deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct and the Los Angeles Times for its balance of intellect and expression. Recipient of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists, the quartet first made international headlines as winner of the inaugural $100,000 Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. The quartet was the first North American ensemble to win the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, and is currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two).
