Hanna Benn – Sankofa
Joplin – Selections from Treemonisha (1912, arr. Rick Benjamin)
Walker – Orpheus for Chamber Orchestra and narrator (1994)
Alvin Singleton – Eine Idee ist ein Stück Stoff

NOCCO performs a newly commissioned work by local composer Hanna Benn and performance artist Davida Ingram, along with pieces by two Pulitzer Prize winning Black American composers – Scott Joplin (1867-1917) and George Walker (b. 1922).

Benn's piece Sankofa ("go back and get it" in the Twi language of Ghana) will feature guest percussion ensemble Argan.

Additionally, NOCCO will perform instrumental music from Joplin’s opera Treemonisha, composed in 1912 but not premiered until 1972. The opera had previously existed only as a piano/vocal score; NOCCO will perform Rick Benjamin's orchestration for "11 + piano," an ensemble common in Joplin's time.

Completing the program is Walker's Orpheus for Chamber Orchestra and narrator (1994).

Davida Ingram will thread together the personal stories of the composers’ lives and works to narrate the performances.

--> This concert is an LMP Critic's Pick, selected by Seattle music critic Philippa Kiraly. Watch it live.
