Violist Heather Bentley and cellist Rowena Hammill join forces with Seattle Symphony violinists Natasha Bazhanov, Artur Girsky, Mikhail Shmidt and Eugene Bazhanov in their ongoing exploration of the fifteen Shostakovich string quartets.

This time it’s the alluring 14th quartet, dedicated to Shostakovich's cellist friend Sergei Shirinsky of the Moscow-based Beethoven Quartet. Moscow-trained violinist Mikhail Shmidt leads this fascinating and tuneful late quartet. The remainder of the program will be a 20th century romp around Europe, with a circus-like trio by Jean Françaix, Hungarian genius Zoltán Kodály’s soulful Serenade for 2 violins and viola, and Luciano Berio’s charming character studies for violin duo.
