Sarah Rothenberg, piano

Maurice Ravel – Une barque sur l’ocean

New series: Hearing Color, Seeing Time: DACAMERA at the Menil Collection

Helen Frankenthaler’s 1973 painting Hybrid Vigor becomes the dramatic backdrop for Sarah Rothenberg’s performance of Ravel’s sensuous solo piano work, Une barque sur l’ocean. Rothenberg then leads us, from the piano, in a spontaneous discussion of color, line, texture, harmony in abstract painting and music, as we move from looking to listening and back again. Drawing on Frankenthaler’s breakthrough approach to canvas, “making line out of color,” and the influence of nature and landscape on both music and painting, Rothenberg finds illuminating connections between harmony and color, texture and paint, and the process of creating form and composition across different art forms.

The performance begins at 7pm Central / 5pm Pacific.
