Music sacred and secular. The lean, abstract reverence of Hailstork's Sonata da Chiesa is opposed to the sprawling-yet-detailed complexity of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 (featuring soprano Teresa Lin).

Adolphus Hailstork studied with Nadia Boulanger, David Diamond and Vittorio Giannini and taught at Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University (Virginia). The Sonata da Chiesa ("church sonata") reflects the composer's fascination with cathedrals, particularly the one (the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York) in which he was a chorister as a child.
