The Vancouver Master Chorale will celebrate its 75th anniversary with two gala concerts including the choral movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Members of the Portland Gay Men's Chorus and the Skyview High School Concert Choir will combine for a 200-voice choir for the well-known Beethoven work. The Master Chorale will also perform Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams and Gloria by Poulenc. The Chorale's professional orchestra will accompany all three works.

The "Ode to Joy" choral movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is one of the most-recognized works of classical music. British composer Vaughan Williams wrote Serenade to Music in 1938, based upon text from Shakespeare. The French composer Poulenc wrote his jazz-influenced Gloria in 1959.

The concerts will also include the world premiere of The Ruins of Mariupol, a string quartet inspired by the devastation of that city in Ukraine. The composer is Daniel Trushov of Vancouver, a member of the choir.

Also on the program is a Puccini aria performed by Morgan Greco, a senior at Washougal High School who won the Chorale's annual Youth Scholarship.

Performances on May 18 & 19.
