French composer Édouard Lalo offers two exceptional pieces on this program: the overture from his opera Le Roi d’Ys, based on the old Breton legend of the drowned city of Ys, followed by his dramatic cello concerto, featuring principal cellist Brian Wharton. One of Tchaikovsky’s most carefree and celebratory works, Symphony No. 2 “The Little Russian,” will complete a memorable season.
