Founded in 1934 by the legendary Czech pianist Josef Pálenícek, the Smetana Trio is today’s foremost Czech chamber ensemble. The trio became the first Czech ensemble to win the BBC Music Magazine Award in 2007 and its recording of works by Smetana, Suk, and Novák received numerous awards from Diapason and Le Monde de la Musique. In 2017, the trio was voted to win the BBC Music Magazine Chamber Award for its recording of the complete trios by Bohuslav Martinu.

Throughout its 86-year career, the Smetana Trio has sought to preserve the interpretational ideals created by its renowned predecessors as well as other exceptional chamber music soloists.

“Every aspect of [the Smetana Trio’s] interpretation is carefully considered without losing an ounce of spontaneity. Individual lines are remarkable for their focus and beauty, though the powerful sense of ensemble is never sacrificed to individual display.”
