An audience favorite for more than 30 years, the adventurous Javanese gamelan ensemble Gamelan Pacifica is under the direction of noted composer and Cornish College of the Arts Professor Jarrad Powell.

Pangkur refers to some important gendhing (compositions) in the Javanese gamelan tradition. It also refers to a particular poetic form (including number of lines, syllable count, and ending syllable) that is part of the tradition of Javanese sung poetry known as måcåpat. This fundamental connection between sung poetry and instrumental composition is at the heart of gamelan gendhing. The process of translating sung poetry into gamelan gendhing can be complex and obscure. Yet the connections can be sensed and revealed. This concert will feature several manifestations of pangkur as an aspect of revealing and also celebrating this truly universal connection between poetry and music.

Gamelan Pacifica is joined for this concert by special guest Megan O’Donoghue-Williams as psindhen (female soloist who sings with the gamelan). Trained as a classical vocalist in the west, Megan then pursued the art of psindhen and became a noted performer throughout Indonesia for her performances in wayang (shadow puppet theater).

Admission: $20 general, $15 seniors, $10 students
