BCO celebrates the Christmas tradition of “Las Posadas,” thanks to support from a 2016-17 4Culture grant.

Las Posadas – community celebrations leading up to Christmas – are an important part of Mexican Christmas traditions. The word posada means “inn” or “shelter” in Spanish, and in this tradition, Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay is re-enacted.

Las Posadas are held in neighborhoods across Mexico and are also becoming popular in the United States. The celebration begins with a procession in which the participants hold candles and sing Christmas carols.

Celebration schedule:

6:00pm Doors open
6:15pm Distribution of items (candles etc)
6:30pm Mexicans songs, led by soprano Alma Rocío Jiménez
6:45pm Letanía (Las Posadas song)
7:00pm Ballard Civic Orchestra with José Iñiguez and Alma Rocío
8:00pm Fiesta with snacks and piñata
