Christopher Adler, khaen

Vera Ivanova – Palpable Breathing
Christopher Adler – Epilogue for a Dark Day
David Loeb – Autumn Green

The program will include three pieces for solo khaen, each by composers trained in the Western concert tradition and with experience in Asian musical traditions. The cross-cultural works demonstrate the range of expression and capabilities of a folk instrument – a contemporary instrument with a long tradition and ancient origins in the highlands of China and Southeast Asia. The works to be performed are Palpable Breathing, by Vera Ivanova, exploring a rich range of techniques for breath and voice applied to the khaen, Christopher Adler's extended solo Epilogue for a Dark Day (which is also the title of his solo album on Tzadik Records), as well as the world premiere of a piece by David Loeb, Autumn Green.

Christopher Adler is a composer, performer, and improviser, and Composition Director for the Nief-Norf Summer Festival. He is one of the world's leading interpreters of contemporary music for the khaen, the free-reed mouth organ of Laos and Northeast Thailand.

The livestream will begin at 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern.
