Immerse yourself in the tongue-in-cheek, colourful world of Erik Satie's sports and pastimes. This filmed performance will be available to watch anytime you like from Friday, 29th of January 2021.
Sports et divertissements ("Sports and Pastimes") is a series of 21 very short works. The score was originally published as a collectible item with illustrations by Charles Martin and calligraphy by Erik Satie himself.
Satie deliberately made this work 'unperformable' and we have taken on the challenge in a very 21st-century way: a digitally-native, multimedia and interactive performance made for audiences watching online. You can choose whether you want to focus on the illustrations (brought to life with simple animations) or the score, or both. The result is something completely new: and not a format that Satie could have imagined. Try it, and tell us what you think.
An ensemble of 10 musicians play the work against a very large 4K screen in a yoga studio. The director and conductor is Jonathan Berman.
About the series: This filmed performance is part of Found Spaces, a series of 4 concert-films that embraces the creativity and flexibility of classical musicians. We gathered a group of brilliant musicians, videographers and artists to create visually exciting performances that couldn't happen in a traditional concert hall or with an in-person audience. These are performances in a digital format for an artistic reason and to create an exciting new audience experience, not just because the COVID-19 pandemic has closed concert halls around the world.
