The 14th Basel Haydn Night – taking its title from the nickname of Symphony No. 53, "L’Impériale" – takes the audience back to a time when the Esterházy Kapellmeister evolved into a full-time opera impresario at the behest of his princely employer. From that moment on, there was not much time left for his own compositions; the maestro complained, moreover, that he had been spending a little too much time with the "light(er) Muse" of late. Yet Haydn nevertheless created masterpieces, and even kept his finger on the pulse with his works from this period, as becomes clear when one considers the success story of "L’Impériale".
The fact that this work was so widely performed in the composer’s lifetime, with its melodious Andante adapted for other – mostly chamber – ensembles, set to vocal texts, and even used in the choreography of contemporary ballets, must be taken as a conclusive sign of its popularity in its day. And if the symphony was then provided with one of those new-fangled slow introductions "for domestic use", or – like its sister work No. 54 – subsequently had trumpet and timpani parts added to it, such embellishments generally served only one purpose: to enhance the prestige of the Esterházy court through musical means. It was not for nothing that Haydn’s master of many years, Prince Nikolaus I, bore the nickname ‘the Magnificent’!
About Haydn2032: In the lead-up to the 300th anniversary of Joseph Haydn's birth in 2032, the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel is organising, producing and financing the performance and recording of all 107 of the composer's symphonies by Il Giardino Armonico and Basel Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, one of the most highly-respected specialists in baroque, early classical and classical music, with its project Haydn2032.
