The second Sinfonieorchester Basel streamed concert in IDAGIO’s Global Concert Hall features a high-profile debut from the young Finnish shooting star conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who will lead the orchestra for the very first time.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky described the motif of fate that runs through all four movements of his Fifth Symphony as “complete surrender to fate or, what is the same, to the unfathomable counsel of providence.” Plagued by self-doubt and anxiety, the composer fled to his Frolovskoye country estate in 1888, where he wrote a new symphony for the first time in eleven years. It seems that Tchaikovsky gained new strength in the countryside, which reflects in the full orchestral sounds, in this symphony imbued with romantic melodies. The Fifth Symphony is without a doubt one of his most popular masterpieces.
