Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21

Beethoven's first symphony is indebted to his teacher Franz Joseph Haydn, the father of the classical symphony. At the same time, it foreshadows Beethoven's future development of the genre, including the more independent use of wind instruments and the transformation of the third movement, traditionally a stately menuet, into what in his later symphonies would become the lively scherzo.

The broadcast will take place at 7pm Pacific. Available for free streaming from July 15 through August 13.
