Note from the Host: "We will be having a pre-concert Zoom at 7pm Eastern / 4pm Pacific, before the concert begins at 7:15pm Eastern / 4:15pm Pacific. From this Groupmuse streaming page, (https://www.groupmuse.com/events/12037-music-for-the-future-the-beethoven-cycle-part-iii) you can access the Zoom by clicking on any of the Zoom links here (i.e. there is no button that says "pre-concert zoom", but you can click on the button for the post-concert zoom, and it will take you to the correct link!)

"PROJECT: MUSIC HEALS US is proud to present the second of a 16-part digital concert series based on the college-accredited, Beethoven-inspired music composition course being created for incarcerated students. This course, named MUSIC FOR THE FUTURE, is an expansion of our previous 5-day intensive workshops which PMHU teaching artists have given in state and federal prisons for the past five years.

"For the second installment of this Groupmuse Centerstage series, you will have the opportunity to take part in the ongoing creation of this exciting new digital composition course, experiencing all sixteen of Beethoven's String Quartets in a new and up-close way, and learn how our students compose using the same tools Beethoven used. We hope you'll join us to take a deep dive into the beauty, inspiration, pain, and redemption that are contained within Beethoven's music, while learning how to craft original works through breaking down Beethoven's compositional process.

"This month, we are listening to the Op. 18, No. 6 quartet, and the famous "Malinconia" movement. Beethoven rarely ever gave his music explicit names, but this piece, with its radical emotional swings from giddiness to despair, was written as "a musical account of manic depressive states" (AE Caldwell).

"The full MUSIC FOR THE FUTURE course will launch in Fall 2022 led by PMHU's lead teaching artist and course developer Brad Balliett.

"This Digital Residency by Project: Music Heals Us has been made possible with generous support from Chamber Music America through its Residency Endowment Fund, and funding from the Connecticut Office of the Arts."

The livestream will take place at 7pm Eastern / 4pm Pacific.
