About Frieda Chan, flute

Frieda Chan made her professional orchestral debut at the age of 17 as the guest principal flutist for the Kobe Philharmonic (Japan). Subsequently, she has performed with many orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony and the Detroit Symphony. In the Pacific Northwest, she has performed with the Eastside Symphony, Northwest Mahler Festival, Philharmonia Northwest, Lake Union Civic Orchestra, Octava Chamber Orchestra, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Puget Sound Symphony, and Seattle Wind Symphony. She was a soloist with the Metropolitan Chamber Players (NYC), Washington Idaho Symphony, Connoisseur Concerts (Spokane), Catania Music Festival (Italy), Okayama Music Festival (Japan), Orchestra Filharmonic di Bacau, Orchestra Filharmonic di Ploiești, and the Bucharest "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania).

Frieda pursued her Bachelor of Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, her Master of Music at the University of Michigan, and her Doctorate of Musical Arts at SUNY Stony Brook. Her flute teachers include Jeffrey Khaner, Carol Wincenc, Amy Porter, Timothy Day, Maria Tamburrino, and Carol Potter. An avid chamber musician, Frieda was a recipient of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Grant and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Grant. Her chamber music coaches include the Emerson String Quartet and the New York Woodwind Quintet.

Currently, Frieda is a PhD scientist working as an Innovation Manager at UW CoMotion, where she commercializes life science technologies and facilitates UW start-up formations. In addition to music and science, Frieda is a medalist at international rowing regattas as a coxswain, a titled handler at national agility trials with her champion border collie (Artemis), a finisher of US half marathon and triathlon, a black belt (Shodan) in karate, a botanical illustrator, and an avid gardener who served in the Education Committee at the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle.
