Lori Goldston and Aaron Michael Butler present Sarah Hennies' concert-length work The Reinvention of Romance.
The Reinvention of Romance "for cello and percussion comprises some 90 minutes of spare, economical gestures, played not quite in sync… [resulting in] an extended sequence of simple figures arranged in succinct packets, each repeated at length until a timer prompts moving on to the next… Weaving together the kinds of fragmentary figurations with which Morton Feldman might have evoked twirling mobiles or intricate tapestries, Ms. Hennies instead evokes the slightly akimbo biorhythms of lives intimately conjoined." – Steve Smith, The New York Times
Audience members are invited to bring yoga mats or blankets to settle into this immersive sonic landscape, or to explore and navigate the resonant pockets of the wonderfully reverberant chapel space throughout this 90' performance.

Lori Goldston is a cellist and composer from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist draws connections between far-flung approaches and explores timbral thresholds of her instrument, driven by a restless curiosity and informed by a long, widely varied history of collaborations with bands, ensembles large and small, composers, film makers and choreographers. She performs throughout the US and abroad, and has released recordings on Sub Rosa, Woodland Fauna, Marginal Frequency, Yo Yo, K Records, Second Editions, Sub Pop, Mississippi, Eiderdown, Substrata, State 51, Ed Banger, Full Spectrum, PIAPTK, SofaBurn, Broken Clover, and No Sun.

Aaron Michael Butler is a percussionist/composer currently based in Athens, OH. He regularly presents concerts of contemporary solo and chamber music, and has been active in the creation of new works through commissioning composers of his generation. Recent performance highlights include the 2013 Athens International Film Festival, 2012/14 Percussive Arts Society International Conventions, the 2014 Ohio University World Music and Dance Festival with marimbist Pei-Ching Wu, a performance with Luciano Chessa's Orchestra of Futurist Noise Intoners in 2015, and the 2016 Nelsonville Music Festival. In 2010 Aaron founded the NOBROW.collective; in conjunction with the Athens International Film Festival NOBROW has commissioned Deep Earth - a large-scale, multimedia work - from composer Matthew Burtner which was premiered in April 2014.
As a composer, he frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines including choreographers Ani Javian and Travis Gatling, filmmaker Chris Lange, and Bristol-based potter Steve Carter. His recent work includes commissions from Andrew Trachsel and the Ohio University Wind Symphony, percussionist Kyle Lutes, and a choral work for the Cincinnati Soundwebs project.
Aaron holds degrees in percussion performance from Ohio University and Centenary College of Louisiana where he studied with Roger Braun, Guy Remonko and Chan Teague. He is currently adjunct professor of music at Ohio University.
