Igor StravinskyThe Firebird Suite
Jessie MontgomerySoul Force
William WaltonViola Concerto ("I. Andante comodo" & "II. Scherzo and trio"; Bryce Burgess, viola)

This is a concert presented by Seattle's only side-by-side orchestra made up of professionals, students, and community musicians, Seattle Collaborative Orchestra. By attending one of our concerts, you just might share our joy in our exacting musicianship and our respect for underrespresented composers.

In this concert you will hear Jesse Montgomery's Soul Force which she wrote in 2015. She says that it "attempts to portray the notion of a voice that struggles to be heard beyond the shackles of oppression." The piece starts out as a march in a single voice building as it rises to a triumphant goal. It is exciting to play!

In 1909 the Russian Ballet impressario Sergei Diaghilev commissioned the 27-year-old Igor Stravinsky to write the score for a ballet depicting a well known Russian folktale, The Firebird, which he accomplished in sic months. Stravinsky traveled to Paris for its premiere, his very first visit to that city. The ballet, the score, the costumes and the set were a success. The score of The Firebird has inspired a number of exciting and diverse productions in the century since it was first composed.

Bryce Burgess is graduating from high school this spring, and will be our featured soloist in William Walton's Concerto for Viola. Bryce is most certainly one of the "courageous young people" who has opted to play with the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, and we present this concerto and Bryce Burgess with pride. Walton's concerto(1929) represented a new voice in music as well a s a new age for viola concertos. Paul Hindemith played the viola and Walton conducted at its premiere!
