About Sound Culture Festival

Sound Culture and WWU CFPA present a festival of adventurous music, sound art, and intermedia on the campus of Western Washington University and in downtown Bellingham. Featuring concerts, lectures, presentations and gallery pieces, SC Fest explores experimental strains of pop, ambient, noise, and hybrid genres; as well as multiple aesthetics of electroacoustic, modern classical and free improvisation.

About Melanie Sehman, percussion improv

A classical percussionist by training, Melanie brings her experience as a percussionist and an astute musical sensibility to a diverse array of styles. Equally at home behind a drum kit or in a chamber ensemble, she particularly enjoys music that explores process, improvisation, gesture, the relationships between music, text and the physical experiences of sound. Melanie has performed at the Seattle Improvised Music Festival, Racer Sessions (SEA), On the Boards (SEA), Creative Music Studio (Woodstock, NY), the Banff Centre for Art and Creativity, Bang on a Can Summer Festival (Mass), Treefort Music Festival (ID), Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Issue Project Room, Princeton University, Park Avenue Armory, Symphony Space, the Americas Society, and the Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival, among others.

Melanie received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music where she also earned the Performer’s Certificate.
