Ground-breaking New York-based, Scottish harpist, Maeve Gilchrist is thrilled to present an intimate and transportive solo recital including material from her most recent critically acclaimed album The Harpweaver. The evening length solo-concert is inspired by and shaped around the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem "The Ballad of the Harp Weaver," which manifests rich, textural harp compositions, playful renditions of traditional tunes from the Celtic Isles, and re-imaginings of the text in both verse and song.
Some subtle electronics augment the soundscape and create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and other-worldly as the instrument itself. In addition, Maeve will be performing some brand new compositions as well as a few selected works from her virtuosic solo harp album, The Ostinato Project, an exploration of the textural possibilities of each hand manifesting as a separate instrument.
About Maeve Gilchrist, harp
Hailed as a phenomenal harp player with unparalleled purity, Maeve Gilchrist has revolutionized the Celtic harp by stretching its harmonic limits and improvisational possibilities. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and now based in Brooklyn, New York, Gilchrist's innovative approach to her instrument transcends genres. She is equally at home performing as a soloist with renowned orchestras as she is playing with traditional Irish folk groups or exploring electronic augmentation.
As a bandleader and composer, Gilchrist tours internationally and has performed at Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the World Harp Congress, and the historic opening of the Scottish Parliament. She has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Esperanza Spalding, and Tony Trishka, among others, and has collaborated with inventive artists such as the Silkroad Ensemble, Arooj Aftab’s Vulture Prince Ensemble, and the progressive folk-quartet DuoDuo. Gilchrest has released five albums, including 2020's critically acclaimed The Harpweaver.
